LOST - The significance of Wallace and the number 108

If you've seen the LOST episode “Lighthouse” that just showed that it was Wallace scribbled on the lighthouse dial at 108 degrees.


Wallace as in David Wallace, a philosopher of physics at Oxford University.
Someone pointed out David Wallace posited the Many Worlds Observation

Lest you forget, this epsiode was also the debut of a character named David.


This ties into my time travel theory I posed back in February 2008 and recently on my blog as well, so I think it is most definitely a search for an observer of sorts.

Usually, once quantum events are observed, one of the alternate timelines will cease to exist. But the Many Worlds theory expounds this to matter at a greater level than the quantum level.

Does this look familiar? This is from Season 2. Every 108 seconds they had to press the button.



On yesterday’s episode, they were supposed to turn the dial to 108 degrees, but Jack broke what I refer to as “the looking glass” (ala Alice in Wonderland) in the lighthouse. Notice Wallace is at 108 degrees.



4 + 8 + 15 + 16 + 24 + 32 = .... you guessed it .... 108.

And if you're counting, this was the 108th episode.

So, the writers have been hinting at the Many World's since Season 2. As of yesterday’s episode they’ve pointed us to Wallace.

I've said all this to explain the significance of Wallace. Who will Mr/Mrs. Wallace actually be? I have no clue.

But, this also brings up another good point:

The piece of music that David was playing is the same music that Faraday attempted to play.

But Faraday couldn't remember how to play the song.

Also, guess what school Faraday taught at? Oxford. The same school the real world person (not LOST character) David Wallace teaches at.

So once again, they are trying to give us a hint here - they're tying "The Variable" episode to "The Lighthouse episode" and letting us know our theory is a valid one. 108 has significance. Wallace has significance.

The Wallace character is very significant to the LOST timeline, if only to alert us to the fact that their is most likely a "Many Worlds" scenario here.

On another related tangent, I believe somebody has to "observe" to negate a timeline. I believe that is the point of the candidate.

Time Travel is possible (black holes, white holes) - My LOST related post

Please note, this was my prediction of how LOST would have an Alternate Timeline back in February 2008. I posted this on a public forum here. I'm reposting this as it has become relevant as of the LA X, season premiere of the final season of LOST. While this is not entirely accurate, I'm wondering how much will be relevant by season's end.

Imagine space (a rubber sheet pulled tight), a big mass (bowling ball sitting on rubber sheet), and a smaller mass (a baseball).

Another way of thinking of the curvature of spacetime was elegantly described by Hans von Baeyer. In a prize-winning essay he conceives of spacetime as an invisible stream flowing ever onward, bending in response to objects in it s path, carrying everything in the universe along its twists and turns.

This is a basic postulate of the Theory of General Relativity. It states that a uniform gravitational field (like that near the Earth) is equivalent to a uniform acceleration.

What this means, in effect, is that a person cannot tell the difference between (a) standing on the Earth, feeling the effects of gravity as a downward pull and (b) standing in a very smooth elevator that is accelerating upwards at just the right rate of exactly 32 feet per second squared.

What is a white hole?

The short answer is that a white hole is something which probably cannot exist in the real universe. A white hole will turn up in your mathematics if you explore the space-time around a black hole without including the star which made the black hole (ie. there is absolutely no matter in the solution). Once you add any matter to the space-time, the part which included a white hole disappears.

How can you have a black hole with no mass?

1. Mathematically this is actually the simplest kind of black hole. Once the singularity is set up it will hold itself together, so the tricky part is setting up the singularity.
2. The only way to set up the singularity in the real universe is to start with it being there. Somehow the universe has to form with ready made singularities.

Why can't white holes exist in nature?

1. There is no reason to suggest that the universe started out with ready made singularities. It would actually be quite odd if it did.
2. Once even the tiniest speck of dust enters the part of space-time which includes the black hole, the part which includes the white hole disappears. The universe has been around for a long time and so even if it did start with white holes, they would have all disappeared by now.

Why bother with the solution if it isn't realistic?

1. It's easier than realistic solutions. (!)
2. Part of the solution is close to being realistic. This part does not include the white hole and describes the space-time outside of a normal black hole.

What would a white hole look like if it did exist?

The people/person who came up with the term 'white hole' was actually being quite literal. A white hole is pretty much like an 'anti-black hole'. A black hole is a place where matter can be lost from the universe. A white hole is a place where (if it could exist with any matter in it - which it can't) matter would pop out into the universe. This has many similarities to the Big Bang singularity (although it's not quite the same, since there was nothing before the Big Bang).


I don't really have a theory on this (because I can't wrap my head around it), but I think it needs to be explored.



How does this apply to LOST?
We know Earth has a North Pole, South Pole, and that Earth's axis rotates on this polar axis based on magnetism. We know Desmond can "see the future". We know Charlie has seen himself in Australia (covering an Oasis song, "Save Me", playing an acoustic guitar in Australia).
We know the hatch had a big magnetic device whose purpose we are not sure of at this time. We know "dead people" have been seen.

Speculations which shouldn't be considered fact:

I propose that Desmond isn't seeing the future but is recalling memories from having travelled through time/space when it was bent or something of that nature. Charlie died in the Looking Glass (LOOKING GLASS aka A MIRROR i.e. A PORTAL?) ... so is this place a passage to an alternate reality somehow accessible because time is bent?
Maybe Charlie was communicating with

Alternate Reality Penny... SO THE BOAT IS INDEED HER RESCUE CREW?

*FLIGHT 815 CRASHES WITH NO SURVIVORS IN THIS ALTERNATE UNIVERSE?
*So Alternate Reality Charlie that nuthouse-bound Hurley sees CHEATED DEATH by going to the ALTERNATE UNIVERSE to speak to Hurley?


I don't know there are alot of loose ends which don't make sense, so feel free to write this off as a hokey theory.

We can be sure "The Casimir Effect" is related to this as well.

the fact that time moves much slower for those on the island than the rest of the world is in einstein's relativity. the more intense gravity is, the slower time moves. they proved this by putting an atomic clock at a low altitude and one at a high altitude, and the one closer to the center of the earth where gravity is heavier, turned a tiny bit slower.

intense electromagnetism can distort gravity. dharma was experimenting with an intense magnet hence the disharging of it every 108 minutes.

Oh right, I have a blog

So I did end up getting that house, and the day I closed someone stole the A/C unit. It's been killing me the past two weeks as the temperature has been hovering in the 80's and 90's during the day and it doesnt cool down until 9pm at the earliest.

And I have a new job which I start monday (FYI, my m key is broke - spilt coffee and a lack of napkins are to blame, so accept the lowercase "m" for now). The transition has tied up my finances along with my roommate who doesn't understand the concept of paying rate on a given date. But, I deal, because I kind of have to at this junction. By August, not so much. I'll be glad to get back to work. I've been doing odd jobs this week for a measly $160, and $50 of that went towards a tetanus shot after I planted my foot on a board with a rusty nail that pierced through the sole of my shoe. It hurt more than a little.

I'm ready to give up on my web project. It is too time consuming. I love where it's going, but it's not returning enough investment on my time as of now. maybe eventually. one of my ex's has dropped by. We don't date anymore, but she's always been a good friend since we broke up. We're just listening to Sting in my living room, drinking OJ in this sweltering heat, debating how to spend our time tonight.

The Home Buying Process is underway

I had a girlfriend who used to bite her nails. I've really felt like doing that this past month. I need a nervous habit to comfort me during this arduous process of shopping for home. I really have to thank George Bush for tanking the economy and Alan Greenspan's confusing economic policy for the deal I may get for this house. If I get it, it will cost me about as much as I pay in rent, before taxes & utilities.

I scoured every MLS I could think of and found Coldwell Banker Atlanta's to be one of my favorite tools. Zillow, not so much. If you're looking as well, I highly suggest an MLS that utilizes map search so you can visually target an area you like and see what's hot.

The things I've learned through reading up on my own have been invaluable. That, choosing a great Atlanta-area agent, not to mention, my best friend who helped with negotiating a price below my target. He owns 19 rental properties in Jacksonville, so I don't think I could've picked a better wingman. Don't sign an agreement with any agent without feeling like they could be your friend.

I've kept running into advice from The Mortgage Professor around the web. I incidentally read a book of his at Barnes & Noble before I found his information to be so prolific on the web. His books are invaluable, so I suggest you at least skim through them or other media if you are buying a home. I've found everyone to be knowledgeable in different areas, but his books cover the whole span, such as PMI, getting an agent, the mortgage process in a thoughtful way.

So far, so good with the home buying process. I think I will be closing around the end of October.

I've been pensive, but things look really good and the home decor aspect is so much fun. The creative aspect and tailoring it to my own liking will be fun. I'm soaking in every HGTV show I can, including DesignStar. I'm getting the house for a price I want, in a location I like. It's only a few miles from downtown Decatur, from family, and the heart of East Atlanta.


Obviously the house needs some paint and some TLC. The obscured hardwood floors also need some finishing. But that's all part of the fun!

Choosing paint colors couldn't be any more fun. I've learned so much about home repair while researching Next up will be the outlets and Atlanta's Miami Circle.

Why write? Why write at all?

I'm not sure where to start. I went to New York to broaden my portfolio, and ended up making new friends and the idea that maybe I should pursue photojournalism. Photography is a part of who I am, and have written off and on; I've even thought of pursuing a career in it.

So, the question is, should I? Will I be any good at it? It will be a while before I take time off to go to school, but I definitely want to go someday. I wrap myself up in so many things, I wonder if I'd make the time.

See, unlike most those lucky enough to pursue further education, when I was nineteen I entered the U.S Army. I was very naive, idealistic when I went in and came out the other end a little bit wiser, and more aware of the world we live in. I also had plenty of IT skills employers wanted as the IT industry had laid a very wide blanket over all varieties of companies that all felt they needed to be on this "Internet thing".

I have a great job. It's got it's problems, and can be stressful, without a doubt. But, do I really want to do this forever? I'm making someone else rich, and that's the best I can do for now. I have no problem with that, but I'd like to eventually run a business larger than the ones I have now, which are in the red. I'd like to do something more creative. Will I be switching careers anytime soon? I don't think so, but I definitely have had my interest in journalism sparked again by a Jordanian I met recently while traveling. But also, is personal enrichment enough? Could I really travel and do the things I love and still be a writer?

I met Lina when I visited New York City. I had arrived on a Thursday, met up with Demetri after messaging the NYC group on CouchSurfing.com, a website hosted in the data center where I work that is kind of like a Facebook for travelers. It was probably around 3 to 5AM Friday, and we were on a rooftop party in NYC, when suddenly some of my new friends decided to call it a night. I was having fun talking to Chenelle and Josanna from Harvard so I stuck around and eventually called it a night, riding the 1 train back to the Upper West Side.

I met Lina the next night, and as it turns out, she had not had any luck finding a couch, as her plans and had stayed up wandering the city looking for a place to stay before finally settling in a Starbucks 24/7. I had a similair story and related as I had stayed on a doorstep in Amsterdam with mail overflowing in its mail slot on Marnixstraat, after refusing to pay 200 Euro as we were backpacking.

To be honest, I didn't know much about Jordan, so I found what she had to say to be very interesting. But, since she'd practically been up all day, alot of the better photos I took of her that night were of her sleeping.

But, hey, some weren't half bad.

What I'm trying to say is, thanks Lina, for getting me writing again.

The U.S. Social Forum is going on today. If you're in Atlanta, you should check it out. Also, make sure to check out Sicko, Michael Moore's documentary on the American healthcare system. Everyone gets sick, so I believe alot of people will relate. I can't really describe how this movie may affect you, you just have to see it.
